Skip navigation! Story from Online Dating. Chances are, at least one person you know has met their partner using a dating app. Male, female, or non-binary, regardless of how you identify or what you like in bed , we all use them. And yet, most apps are still designed with only cis straight people in mind. What gives? By its very premise, which requires the woman in a match to send the first message, Bumble assumes that its users are straight.
I’m Dating a Woman For The First Time. Here’s What’s Different
Online dating as a lesbian, for the most part, still involves having to deal with men. Many sites continue to surface guys as potential mates, despite setting your preferences otherwise. Up until recently, some of the nation has acted as though lesbianism didn’t exist outside of porn and Ellen Degeneres, and acted as if girls only turn to dating women if they had a bad experience with a man.
There is no one way to be a lesbian or queer woman. As ‘femmes’ lesbians whose appearance and behaviour are seen as traditionally ‘feminine’ by the world at large , we’re both blonde, around the same height, and love to wear pink lipstick. We’re also wife and wife. Being in a relationship with someone who is femme in similar way to you certainly has its perks. We share makeup and clothes what’s yours truly is mine. Also known as, “but you’re too feminine to be gay!
Just because I wear lipstick, it doesn’t make me automatically straight. It’s the assumption of heterosexuality. It can get really awkward when someone doesn’t believe you’re gay and love the ladies. The best way to shut them up is to tell them that THEY haven’t met the right man yet , and how do they know until they’ve given it a go?! No, no you have not Sir.

Many dating apps have security concerns or aren’t built for non-binary genders. Here’s the best of what’s out there.
The Frisky — There are a lot of misconceptions about lesbians. I’m confronted with them daily and, frankly, hearing this stuff is like getting smacked in the face with a wet rag. Usually, when someone fires off a stereotype, I am so shocked that I just stand there, staring, opening and closing my mouth like a big, dumb goldfish. So I’m going to take this opportunity to get up on my soapbox and stamp out all the stupid, ignorant misconceptions I have heard over the years. Hopefully, next time I hear one of these things I can eloquently explain why it’s untrue rather than just stammering, “What!?
Lesbians hate men. Actually, I find that often the opposite is true. A lot of gay women I know have a ton of guy friends and find that they get along with dudes as well as with chicks. I like checking out girls and my straight lady friends aren’t so interested in doing that. I feel very comfortable with my guy friends because they don’t care about how I look and don’t gossip to nearly the same degree.
That said, I am very, very close to some of my female friends. There is definitely a very special bond between people of the same gender. Being gay is easier than being straight because you’re dating someone who is the same gender as you.

How do lesbian, queer or bisexual women find partners? Are you one the many queer women who struggle to find a date or a relationship even in this age of internet? How do lesbian and bisexual women navigate various offline and online dating spaces? As a queer woman, I have had my various shares of problems in finding a date. Even on dating sites, it is difficult to find another feminine lesbian woman if it is not visibly mentioned in their profiles.
The lack of online and offline spaces to find romance is an important issue that lesbian women face everywhere. On my dating profiles, I clearly mention that I am queer and interested in only transmen and other female assigned at birth people. However, my inbox in dating sites is filled with friendship requests from cis and straight men.

Skip to content. I live in LA which means there are so many ways to meet other queer women. There may not be a spark there but at least I have a friend. I try to go into situations with a bright outlook.
Navigating womanhood as a lesbian comes with many frustrations. In response to the alienation that gay women may feel from this, some lesbians choose to embrace their own interpretation of womanhood in the form of two popular labels: butch and femme. In fact it’s far from it. Similarly, the rejection of feminine gender norms by butches is intrinsically radical: it empowers lesbians to renounce patriarchal standards of beauty, giving them relative freedom to present in whichever way they feel most comfortable.
C, a year-old femme, agrees. It was how I desired butches, and it was how I thought of myself in relation to lesbian history. As a result, these environments became dominated by female manual labourers — it was much easier for butch women to avoid oppressive dress codes as a taxi driver or a factory worker. Today Lexie, a year-old butch from Canada, finds her label validating. We’re really out on our own, taking up space in a world that doesn’t know what to do with us.
I want to be my real self and because of who my real self is, I have to defy those things to achieve it. Awareness of this culture helped her embrace her sexuality and gender expression.

The dating app provides a way to expand my dating pool beyond the usual crop of friends, exes and friends of exes. But why do men pop up in my feed of potential matches when my account is set to see women-identified profiles only? To be honest, it creeps me out to know that men can see my profile after all, Tinder is a two-way street. As a femme lesbian who is often mistaken for straight, I get enough unwanted attention from men.
Being a generally curious journalist, I set out to solve the mystery. In July, I deleted my Tinder account and signed back up on the platform for an entirely fresh start. While creating a new account, the app asked me to choose a gender male or female were the only options and I chose female and a sexual orientation you could pick three; I went with lesbian, queer, and gay. I reached a mildly confusing page that allowed me to pick a second gender identity non-binary and asked whether I wanted to be included in searches for men or women I chose women.
With all of these settings carefully selected, I figured I was in the clear. I was wrong. I swiped left for days on opposite-sex couples preying on bisexual women and encountered numerous profiles for — you guessed it — straight, cisgender men.
10 Things Not To Say To A Femme Lesbian
So I wanted to address that a little. First of all, you might not have realized it but the Girl Zero saga is all about another femme. S and Zoe were both femmes. For the first several years of me figuring out how I fit into the lesbian community, I was only attracted to femmes. And even then, when men see two femmes kissing, they tend to think the girls are bisexual and they treat it like a special floor show, just for them.
The married couple known as Wegan explain why they created a “femme” dating site for lesbians.
I recently read a Facebook status update from an acquaintance that stated, “I don’t understand why lesbians date women who look like men. If you’re into chicks that look like dudes, just get with a dude. However, I’ve only been asked about my preference for androgynous women by heterosexuals and gay men, never by another lesbian. Coming in at number 11 was “But if you like girls that look like boys If you like boys so much, why don’t you want to date my girlfriend who ‘looks like a boy’?
Case dismissed, overruled, approach the bench, goodnight. This may come as shocking news to some people, but it is a completely arbitrary, socially constructed standard that men should wear bow-ties and women should wear pearls, and not vice versa. Moreover, rules about how men and women should dress and behave are constantly changing, further evincing that these constructs are subjective. It was once considered “unladylike” for “real women” belonging to certain classes and racial groups to do “manly” things, such as work outside the home and wear pants.
Some sources report that Vogue magazine did not feature a woman in pants until Today, women are working outside of the home and continuing to make progress towards securing jobs traditionally held by men. The power-pantsuit wearing senators and CEOs of today are not thought of as trying to “be like boys” because society has expanded its definition of what it means to be a woman.

Dating apps are rarely built with lesbian, bisexual, and queer women in mind, but they can still work if you know how to use them right.
Personally, two years into my first-ever lesbian relationship, I’m very happy to take the time to acknowledge the amazing lesbians out there in the world — my girlfriend included. And, as someone who has had sex with women but only dated men before this relationship, I appreciate being in a lesbian relationship all the more. Firstly, I’m a bisexual and proud of it. And being in a lesbian relationship in no way takes away from the fact that I am a bisexual — there is no acceptance of bi erasure here.
Still bi. Still here. Still proud. But what being in a lesbian relationship has done is made me realize how effing amazing being in a lesbian relationship is. Because there are a lot of differences between dating a man and dating a woman and most of them make me so freaking grateful that the person I fell for is a fellow femme. So if you’ve ever thought about acting out your sapphic leanings and switching your Tinder search to women, here are some factors worth considering.
I hate the cheque dance on dates. The idea that I shouldn’t pay is a patronizing throwback to when women were, you know, basically property. I don’t care that it’s tradition, I find it really uncomfortable and a little insulting when someone acts like I shouldn’t pay. With a woman, it’s not awkward at all or at least, just the normal amount of money awkwardness.
